Tarot Myths and Why They’re Wrong
I’m in quite a few tarot groups on social media, and I see it all the time — things newer readers have been told ‘must’ happen for them to be ‘real’ tarot card readers.
But you know what? Those things just aren’t true.
Let’s talk about some of those tarot myths, and why they’re a bunch of baloney.
- You must be given your first deck.
I grew up around tarot — my mom read when I was a little girl (and got paid for it!). But I didn’t get my first deck until I was in my 20’s, and it was given to me by a roommate. It was the traditional RWS deck (Rider-Waite-Smith), in all its garish glory. That roommate turned out to be incredibly toxic and abusive, and not only did I get rid of that deck as insanely fast as I could, but I also didn’t touch tarot again for years after that.
In my early 30’s, I began to collect tarot cards, but didn’t use them. I’m not sure why I collected them, at the time, I just knew that if I saw a deck with art I loved, I needed to have it. Those decks sat on my shelf until I was close to 40, when I felt the need to start drawing a daily card, just after my daughter was born. And it only grew from there.
Nobody else has ever given me a deck aside from that awful excuse for a human that was my roommate.
